Cimaron Communications Corp. (Andover, MA) announced it will produce packet-over-sonet (Synchronous Optical Network) and atm-over-sonet chips. According to Cimaron, there are only a few developers of high-end sonet chips with complex framing and mapping features, most of which are captive within large telecommunications companies for their internal use. Founded in January 1998, Cimaron plans to announce the availability of a series of sonet framer and mapper chips later this year, which will provide atm- and packet-over-sonet solutions at OC-48 (2.5-Gbit/sec), OC-12 (622-Mbit/sec) and OC-3 (155-Mbit/sec) rates. The company will start selling its chips through direct sales in the third quarter of this year.
