Because of demand for additional capacity, Global Telesystems Ltd. in Bermuda and Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd., Morristown, NJ, have reconfigured their Atlantic Crossing (AC-1) cable system and made the Netherlands a new landing point. Phase One of the project is expected to connect the Brookhaven cable station in Shirley, NY, with the Land`s End cable station in Whitesands, UK, by May 1998. Phase Two, scheduled for completion in November 1998, will connect the New York station with Deutsche Telekom`s Westerland cable station on the island of Sylt in Germany. Another phase will connect the ptt Telecom cable station in the Netherlands and Germany; all work is scheduled for completion in February 1999.
