An international team of suppliers has signed a multisource agreement for STM-16/OC-48 (2.5-Gbit/sec) optical transmitters and receivers. The agreement calls for a uniform package outline and pin function definition as well as shared optical and electrical characteristics. The modules will be compatible with ITU G.957 Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Bellcore GR-253-CORE standards. The companies may choose to jointly recommend circuit layouts for electrical input and output terminations and grounding practices. The units will be pigtailed; no connector will be specified. The supplier team includes Alcatel Optronics (Nozay, France), Ericsson Components AB (Stockholm), Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ), Mitsubishi Electric (Tokyo), and Sumitomo Electric (Tokyo).
