NETs (Paris) will create an optical-network link from the United Kingdom to France along the Euro Tunnel route between London and Paris. The initial link, which was scheduled to have been completed by press time, will use two physical routes that follow highways and railways, then through the English Channel tunnel. The company has awarded a contract to Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ) for the WaveStar OLS 80G dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) system. The system will provide 16 channels of 2.5-Gbit/sec transmission. NETs plans to lease wavelengths on the network to European telecommunications carriers.
