July 1, 1998

Bell Canada (Montreal) is launching a new national company to provide high-speed data and Internet services to business customers over a national broadband network. Bell will purchase 12 strands on the fiber-optic network being jointly developed by fonorola Telecommunications (Montreal) and Ledcor Industries Ltd. (Vancouver, BC, Canada). The fiber-optic strands will provide Bell Canada with 8422 route-km from Edmonton, AB, Canada to Toronto and from Seattle, WA, to Sarnia, ON, Canada. This enables the new company to establish its own broadband network and extend the fiber-optic facilities to the east coast. In a separate venture, Bell Canada was awarded a $20 million contract to provide telecommunications services to Canadian National Railway. Under the agreement, Bell Canada will provide all of Canadian National`s connectivity and voice and data transfer services for the next two years.
