January 29, 2003--RSoft Design Group Inc. today announced the immediate availability of BandSOLVE 1.1, the latest release of its design software for the calculation of photonic band structures--the only commercial tool of its kind, claims the company. BandSOLVE is built from the ground up to simplify the design and analysis of all photonic crystal (PC) devices.

BandSOLVE enables users to create PC designs in an intuitive CAD interface, and then generates accurate band structures and mode profiles with a just few mouse clicks. BandSOLVE handles arbitrary structures in one, two, or three dimensions, and can analyze numerous modal properties. An add-on module to RSoft's BeamPROP CAD Framework for Photonics, BandSOLVE complements RSoft's FullWAVE finite-difference time domain (FDTD) software to provide a complete picture of the behavior of photonic crystal devices including slabs, 3D crystals, and photonic crystal fibers. Updates in the 1.1 release focus on the design of photonic crystal slabs, and algorithmic enhancements have also increased the software's speed.

"We have been gratified by the degree of interest in BandSOLVE since its debut seven months ago," says RSoft chief executive officer Dr. Robert Scarmozzino. "Our customers appreciate that a full understanding of photonic crystal devices requires both band structure optimization and propagation studies to quantify losses and coupling issues. The combination of BandSOLVE and FullWAVE represents a compelling and complete solution to a range of photonic crystal design problems. Other tool suppliers can only address half the problem."

BandSOLVE 1.1 is available for purchase now.
