29 May 2003 Santa Clara CA--PMC-Sierra and Trebia Networks have announced a complete Gigabit Ethernet to Fibre Channel reference system intended to accelerate the development of IP storage equipment.

The reference system integrates Trebia Networks' SNP-1000 and newly announced SNP-1000L storage network processors with PMC-Sierra's PM8356 QuadPHY FC and PM8354 QuadPHY 1G SERDES and RM5200 MIPS-based processors.

The new reference system is a complete sub-system solution that includes reference design, board schematics and layout as well as storage management software to facilitate the rapid deployment of IP storage gateways, fabric and director switches and iSCSI-based storage systems.

Mark Stibitz, vice president and general manager, Enterprise and Storage Division at PMC-Sierra, said, "Our collaborative reference design provides storage equipment manufacturers with a high performance, high density and low power IP storage solution coupled with an accelerated time-to-market advantage.

"In addition to the development of a complete sub-system, we are ensuring interoperability between storage processor, control processor and physical layer interfaces."

Standards Compliance and Proven Interoperability
Recently ratified by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) and Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP), these industry standards that are now in place allow the convergence Ethernet and Fibre Channel enterprise networks and equipment.

IETF, iSCSI and FCIP are gaining significant attention from enterprise IT managers to integrate Storage Area Networks (SANs) and providing long distance storage connectivity for multiple applications including disaster recovery for business continuity, storage consolidation, data migration and remote mirroring.

Trebia's storage network processor delivers unprecedented versatility and performance for the iSCSI and FCIP IETF standards while providing the flexibility to support future standards changes or new feature requirements.

PMC-Sierra's multi-Gigabit CMOS SERDES exceed IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet and ANSI T11.2 Fibre Channel jitter specifications and interface seamlessly to Trebia's SNP-1000 and SNP-1000L products. Interworking four Gigabit Ethernet channels with two ports of 2 Gigabit Fibre Channel, the reference system offers an unprecedented low power solution of 14.2W while operating at full wire speed.

Ruediger Stroh, chief executive officer of Trebia Networks, said, "The combination of our advanced Storage Network Processor which features industry leading I/Os per second (IOPS) processing, and PMC-Sierra's leading edge SERDES, provides an optimal solution for emerging iSCSI and FCIP designs."

"This alliance clearly demonstrates our combined effort to deliver a complete, standards-based IP Storage Gateway solution with the flexibility customers need to deliver differentiated storage solutions."

The reference system is now available. A comprehensive support package including schematics, datasheets, software drivers, user manuals, hardware reference designs and device models is also available at www.pmc-sierra.com/storage and www.trebia.com
