Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced it has begun shipment of MetroCor fiber to Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:LVLT) for installation in metropolitan networks Level 3 has built across North America. MetroCor fiber is specifically optimized for metropolitan networks, enabling significant cost savings by reducing costly optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversions. Level 3 expects to start installing MetroCor fiber in specific markets in the first quarter of 2001. The fiber shipment is part of the global supply agreement between Level 3 and Corning, announced on October 23, 2000. Corning Cable Systems will provide the fiber cabling for this project.
MetroCor fiber affords network companies significant cost and performance advantages over standard single-mode fiber, particularly in large metropolitan network systems that extend more than 50 miles. Level 3 has constructed a global broadband network in Asia, Europe and North America. Fully optimized for Internet Protocol, it includes metropolitan networks in 32 cities around the world.
MetroCor fiber is a non-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF) optimized for metropolitan ring applications and DWDM equipment. It reduces network expenses by increasing the capability of low-cost lasers and by reducing the need for optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversions. The unique, negative dispersion characteristic of MetroCor fiber allows optical signals to remain strong for distances three times greater than standard single-mode fiber. These unique characteristics bring economic value to Level 3 Communications' international broadband network.
