Belgian wireless operator Mobistar, a France Telecom subsidiary, has selected a joint venture of Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSE:NT.) and European network integrator Telindus to deliver a high-performance Optical Internet solution. The joint venture -- called Nortel Networks & Telindus -- will supply Mobistar with a 10 gigabits-per-second (Gbps) optical network backbone designed to be scalable to allow for future expansion.
Mobistar has also extended existing supply agreements with Nortel Networks for wireless infrastructure equipment, and with Nortel Networks & Telindus for backbone transmission equipment. Telindus is involved with Nortel Networks in implementation, installation and support for Mobistar's wireless and transmission networks.
Deployment of a DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) optical backbone network featuring Nortel Networks OPTera Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System and OPTera Connect DX optical switch has already begun.
Nortel Networks OPTera Long Haul 1600 is scalable to 1.6 terabits per second on a single fiber -- equivalent to 430,000 high-definition video channels or 28 million simultaneous Internet connections. Nortel Networks OPTera Connect DX features high capacity and open optical interfaces for maximum flexibility and direct connectivity to Internet routers and switches.
