Analog Devices Inc. unveiled at the Fiberoptics Forum 2001 in Tokyo, Japan, two new products in its portfolio of optical networking laser diode drivers (LDDs), extending dual-loop capability to 3.3-volt applications.

These "anyrate" LDDs support data rates from 50 Mbit/sec to 3.3 Gbits/sec. Operating at reduced supply voltages, the new ADN2847 and ADN2848 offer laser module designers a low cost solution for delivering consistent optical performance over a wide range of temperatures and operating conditions, claim compnay representatives. Applications include SONET OC-3/12/48, SDH STM-1/4/16, Fiber Channel, and Gigabit Ethernet modules.

The ADN2847 and ADN2848 LDDs actively manage laser diode output power by continuously sensing the transmitted optical signal and correcting it for variations caused by laser diode degradation or changes in operating temperature. This feature is especially important in uncooled applications, says the company, and those that require long-term stability and reliability. The dual-loop architecture enables the drivers to work with any standard monitor photodiode, while avoiding any data format limitations.

The ADN2847 and ADN2848 are pin-to-pin compatible, so migration is easily achieved to address changing system requirements. While the ADN2848 targets 50-Mbit/sec to 622-Mbit/sec applications where low cost is a key requirement, the ADN2847 supports data rates from 50 Mbits/sec up to 3.3 Gbits/sec. Both the ADN2847 and the ADN2848 operate from a single 3-V to 3.6-V supply. The ADN2847 and ADN2848 feature modulation currents of up to 80 mA and bias currents of up to 100 mA. Additional capabilities include laser fail and degrade alarms, automatic laser shutdown, bias current monitors and modulation current monitors.

The ADN2847 laser diode driver is available in both 7 mm x 7 mm 48-lead and 5 mm x 5 mm 32-lead chip-scale packages, and is priced at $23.00 in 1,000 piece quantities. The ADN2848 is available in a 5 mm x 5 mm 32-lead chip-scalepackage and is priced at $11.25 in 1,000 piece quantities.
