Fortis will lease dark fiber infrastructure from Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (MFN) (Nasdaq: MFNX), a supplier of optical IP Internet infrastructure within key metropolitan areas internationally.
Fortis will use the infrastructure leased from MFN to connect several of its main locations in the Netherlands. Fortis chose MFN because of MFN's experience with fiber-optic infrastructure and MFN's broad network presence in The Netherlands. The infrastructure will provide Fortis with the reliability of a fully redundant data network as well as the ability to provision its own bandwidth on an unmetered basis, as required, to meet increasing capacity demands. In addition, the dedicated dark fiber provides a higher level of security compared with traditional leased facilities, since no other customer traffic will utilize the network.
