Riverstone Networks, a provider of service creation infrastructure for metropolitan area networks, announced the general availability of the RS 1000 Optical Metro Access Router. The RS 1000 joins the RS 3000 in Riverstone's line of highly compact Optical Metro Access Routers. Featuring MPLS for metro service creation and versatile connectivity that runs the gamut from WDM to 10/100 Ethernet, the RS 1000 enables the delivery of rich services across a wide variety of network infrastructure. Built to deliver control and accountability to service providers, the RS 1000 allows incumbent carriers to migrate transparently to next-generation optical networks.

With optical infrastructure spreading into metropolitan networks, content and massive bandwidth meet to create an environment ripe for high octane services. Riverstone's RS family of switches and routers offer hardware-based bandwidth control, security, and accountability features for a wide range of deployments, from regional Points of Presence (POPs) and peering points, to small POPs, hosting centers, co-location cages, and building basements.

The RS 1000 Optical Metro Access Router is a compact platform connecting optical and legacy networks in a single device. The RS 1000 is a two-slot chassis measuring two rack units high. Customers can leverage a small platform that caters to a service delivery model in a fixed configuration chassis, without the cost associated with unwanted ports. Its two expansion module slots support multi-transport connections to WDM, Gigabit Ethernet, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and SONET, as well as a multi-rate WAN module with integrated CSU/DSU. The RS 1000 also supports an additional 32 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet ports, up to 4 1000 Base-SX/LX and LH (70 km) Ethernet ports, up to eight serial ports, and as many as 4 HSSI ports.

The RS 1000Udelivers advanced Hardware Rate Limiting, including port and aggregate rate limiting and dynamic, real-time provisioning. It also allows carriers to manage bandwidth by the port, application, or user, without compromising routing or switching performance.

For detailed billing and accounting, the RS 1000 Optical Metro Access Router enables service providers to capture bit-level accountability information without affecting network performance.

The RS 1000 Optical Metro Access Router is now available.
