Telecommunications trial

Tellabs Operations Inc., Lisle, IL, and Newchannels Corp., a division of Newhouse Broadcasting Corp., are conducting a multi-phase field trial to test the delivery of telecommunications services to homes and businesses in Syracuse, NY. The companies are using Tellabs` Cablespan telephony-over-cable system. The first phase involves a technical trial of the Cablespan system within the cable distribution network. The second phase will gauge customer acceptance of the various telecommunications services that could be delivered by a hybrid fiber/coaxial-cable network. Other services will be targeted to the business-to-business, residence-to-residence and business-to-residence environments. The trial will also deal with videoconferencing, database access and wide area networking.
