Alcatel Submarine Networks, London, has been awarded a $35 million contract to supply and install a submarine fiber-optic telecommunications system in Indonesia to link Jakarta and Surabaya. The submarine cable system, spanning 730 kilometers, will operate at 5 gigabits per second over one fiber pair (64,000 simultaneous voice circuits). Seven inline repeaters will use synchronous digital hierarchy and optical amplification technologies. The system is slated to be ready for service in November 1996.
