Four-fiber ring installed

Herndon, VA-based NEC America Inc. completed a 6-node, optical carrier, level 48, four-fiber ring for Sprint/United Telephone in Florida. Serving the Maitland Park region, this ring is the first of 13 that Sprint/United plans to install through its network to ensure reliable service for its customers. Two of the four fibers are dedicated for protection only, enabling traffic to be restored almost instantly in the event of fiber cuts or other equipment failure. Sprint/United plans to increase capacity through narrowband wavelength-division multiplexing. The technology quadruples throughput in outside-plant fibers, thus increasing capacity without having to lay additional fibers.
