Submarine system

Telstra Corp. Ltd. and Opus Network Pty. Ltd. have ordered a submarine telecommunications system from Alcatel Submarine Networks. The submarine telecommunications system, Jasuraus, will be installed between Australia and Indonesia, specifically between Port Hedland and Jakarta. The system will have a transmission capacity of 5 gigabits per second, allowing 60,000 simultaneous telephone conversions, as well as other services, including videophone, computer data transmission and multimedia. Jasuraus will be completed at the end of 1996 and will be connected to the Asia-Pacific cable network.
