6 NOVEMBER 2008 -- Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. says it has helped Telefónica de España successfully deploy its first 40G transmission network worldwide. The network' s WDM optical rings are designed to enable high-bandwidth and intelligent transmission and more flexible dispatch.

The rapid growth of data traffic has made it necessary to increase the per-channel capacity of transport networks up to 40G, says Huawei. Telefónica de España decided to construct a 40G intelligent network to improve the reliability and capacity of its network and to reduce its operational costs by improving its provisioning and network running capabilities, the systems vendor added.

Huawei supplied reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology; the equipment also is ready to activate advanced network control and management planes based on GMPLS, Huawei says.
