Brazil cable

Cable & Wireless Marine in Vienna, VA, has won a $44.4 million contract for the installation of domestic fiber-optic cable systems in Brazil. A 2430-kilometer, fiber-optic festoon cable system is scheduled to be one of the world`s longest unrepeatered subterranean cable networks. The contract was awarded by Schahin Cury Engenharia e Comercio Ltda., which is building the cable network for Embratel, the national and international carrier in Brazil (see Lightwave, November 1995, page 9). The system includes two festoon systems and two terrestrial cables to run from Rio de Janeiro in the south to Fortaleza in the north. It will provide connections to existing submarine cable systems connecting to Europe and Central and North America. Cable suppliers are Simplex Wire & Cable Co. and Pirelli Cable Corp. in the north and south, respectively.
