Lucent Technologies, Berkeley Heights, NJ, is providing a 271-Type uncooled laser with lower power consumption and less board space than are normally required for lasers. The laser supports digital voice and data applications operating at 2.5 Gbits/sec or greater and can also be used for SDH-16 long-reach Synchronous Optical Network applications.
