AT&T undersea pact: AT&T Submarine Systems Inc., Morristown, NJ, has received a $21-million contract from GST Telecommunications Inc., Vancouver, WA, to design, engineer, install and maintain a 300-mile undersea fiber-optic telecommunications system that will link Kauai, Molokai, Hawaii, Lanai and Maui. Known as the Hawaiian Island Fiber Network (HI FiberNet), the system contains 12 fiber pairs operating to 2.5 Gbits/sec and provides capacity equal to 400,000 simultaneous two-way telephone conversations.
