plans to begin construction of an 879-km telecommunications fiber-optic cable linking Nanning and Guangzhou in the south, with completion slated for 1998. The fiber line is expected to cost approximately US$26.5 million, including $6.42 million from foreign investment. With 240,000 long-distance terminal circuits, the cable will connect with major cables in the southwestern, south central and eastern regions of China.
