The Peninsula suburb of Palo Alto, CA, plans to install a 20-mile network of fiber-optic cable. The City of Palo Alto Electric Utility will place cable in conduits and on poles alongside existing coaxial and twisted-pair cable. The utility intends to lease cable to local exchange carriers and other service providers, while reserving some of the lines for city use.
