Fiber-optic attenuators

Compact variable attenuators provide ultralow backreflection levels of -60 dB for both 1300 and 1550 nm, and -70 dB for single wavelengths. Available in housing as small as 12.5 mm in diameter or in square housing designs, these attenuators suit telecommunications applications such as cable-TV systems. The attenuation range is 0.4 to more than 80 dB, with 0.01-dB resolution. Insertion loss is 0.4 dB for singlemode fibers. Attenuators with polarization-maintaining fibers are also available. Prices start at $130 for the -60-dB backreflection units.
