The Forerunner ASX-1000 scalable ATM switch is used for the local area network backbone. The unit features nonblocking time-space-time architecture, supporting four 2.5-Gbit/sec switching fabrics connected via a central 10-Gbit/sec backplane. Priced at $42,950, it is equipped with redundant, load-sharing power supplies and redundant fans. The switch monitors temperature, fan status and power voltages.
