27 JANUARY 2009 The Thales/Dimetronic consortium has selected Alcatel-Lucent (search for Alcatel-Lucent) to supply a comprehensive communications network for the 440-km-long high-speed railway line linking Madrid and Valencia in Spain.
Alcatel-Lucent says its equipment will support the signaling and traffic control systems and will bring enhanced quality of service and reliability. The new communications network, which will be operational in the second half of 2010, will be the largest IP/MPLS network ever deployed for high-speed rail transport in Spain, the company asserts.
Said Adolfo Hernández, president of Alcatel-Lucent's activities in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, "High-speed rail networks rely upon safety and security, and our optical and IP network transformation experience around the world will provide the needed communications infrastructure to enable effective signaling, safety, and traffic control systems for the Valencia to Madrid line in Spain."
Alcatel-Lucent deliverables will be based on its IP/MPLS and optical technologies and will include overall project management, installation, and maintenance as well as global integration. The communications network will also feature a common management system based on the Netcool Tivoli commercial platform.
