DECEMBER 6, 2006 -- ADVA Optical Networking (search for ADVA Optical Networking) and Siemens (search for Siemens) today announced a major contract with Eircom, the Republic of Ireland's largest telecommunications carrier, to create a national next-generation network. The new network will provide Eircom's business and residential customers with a range of bandwidth-intensive applications, including IPTV, voice-over-IP (VoIP) and triple play services combining voice, video, and data in one bundle.
Eircom is the main provider of telecommunications services in Ireland, with approximately 1.6 million fixed-line telephone lines. To address the growing demand for high-capacity data services, Eircom will build an optical backbone spanning the length and breadth of the country, enabling networking speeds of up to 10 Gbits/sec. This next-generation network will enable more flexible, cost-effective delivery of business and residential services.
The nationwide network will be built through the cooperation of ADVA Optical Networking and Siemens. Using the ADVA FSP 3000 WDM system as its foundation, Eircom will be able to scale network growth with demand and retain low capital expenditure costs by seamlessly adding new services when and where they are needed, say ADVA representatives.
"Eircom is deploying our FSP 3000 in an architecture that will provide a very flexible and powerful optical foundation to deliver innovative new services to their customers," contends Brian P. McCann, chief strategy and marketing officer of ADVA Optical Networking. "This will be a future-proof, forward-looking network."
Conor Olden, business unit manager at Siemens added, "This is a significant investment by Eircom," adds Conor Olden, business unit manager at Siemens. "Convergence is driving the network to new levels of intelligence, where a packet-based infrastructure is critical in an increasingly competitive market. The combination of Siemens' transport and implementation expertise combined with best-in-class technology from ADVA Optical Networking's robust platform creates a winning solution from which bandwidth-intensive network users in Ireland will benefit," he says.
