DECEMBER 19, 2006 -- AboveNet Inc. (search for AboveNet), a provider of fiber-based connectivity for businesses and carriers, has begun upgrading the capacity of its nationwide Tier 1 IP network backbone with Juniper Networks (search for Juniper Networks) T-series core routers.

AboveNet's private optical network delivers network and IP services in and between 14 top U.S. metro markets and London. The Juniper Networks T-series will both enhance the capacity of AboveNet's network and its existing Layer 2 eWAN service, and enable it to introduce new services such as Layer 3 MPLS-based VPN services.

"We have begun upgrading our core network with state-of-the-art technology to ensure we can continue to scale to meet our customers' growing traffic demands and introduce new services, while maintaining our industry-leading reliability and performance," said Rajiv Datta, AboveNet's CTO. "We are expanding with Juniper's flagship T-series to enable us to make this transition and to deliver innovative services to our customers with the reliability they expect from AboveNet."

Over 2000 T-series units have been deployed in customer networks worldwide. The T-series leverages Juniper Networks' multi-chassis TX Matrix technology, allowing service providers to scale to multi-terabit rates nondisruptively and without the risks associated with introducing new equipment or operating systems, according to Juniper.

"With many of the country's largest content providers, enterprises, and Internet service providers relying on AboveNet for their network services, network reliability and availability can have significant financial effects for AboveNet's customers," said Kim Perdikou, executive vice president, Infrastructure Products Group and general manager, Service Provider Business Team, Juniper Networks. "With the Juniper Networks T-series powering AboveNet's IP network, they benefit from the reliability, consistency, and stability of JUNOS, and have an agile, open, and customized network that they can leverage to deliver new services to meet customer needs. Juniper is pleased to be an important component of AboveNet's continued commitment to provide its customers' with an uncongested, low latency, and high-quality network."
