OCTOBER 16, 2006 -- Lucent Technologies (search for Lucent) has been awarded a contract to supply SK Telecom, South Korea's largest wireless service provider, with optical networking systems for building out SK's intelligent backbone networks.
Lucent will deliver its next-generation optical crossconnect (OXC) system, the LambdaUnite MultiService Switch (MSS), to major central offices of SK Telecom, completing the deployment by the end of December. Lucent's Optical Management System (OMS) will provide network management and provisioning capabilities for the deployment, and Lucent Worldwide Services will provide professional technical support.
The new equipment will increase the capacity, reliability, and efficiency of SK Telecom's backbone network, Lucent says. Additionally, the company asserts that the deployment will provide SKT with significant cost savings via the compact size and low power requirements of the LambdaUnite MSS.
Bart Vogel, president of Lucent Technologies Asia Pacific, said, "Korea is one of the world's leading and sophisticated telecommunications markets and the fact that SK Telecom has chosen Lucent's optical crossconnect system is a clear indication of their faith in our solution. Quite frankly this is a huge endorsement of our capabilities in a complex and industry leading telecommunications network."
"This very significant win for Lucent reaffirms Lucent's leading position in the Korean optical networking market, and further highlights our worldwide leadership in the delivery of optical crossconnect systems, critical components for converged networks," said John Yang, president and CEO of Lucent Technologies Korea. "Lucent is dedicated to supporting SK Telecom in its efforts to generate new revenue opportunities and develop future growth opportunities."
