OCTOBER 16, 2006 -- Global Crossing (search for Global Crossing) has deployed Xtera's (search for Xtera) Nu-Wave XLS DWDM system on two unrepeatered submarine links between Ireland and the UK. The unrepeatered links are part of Global Crossing's international network and will support the increasing demand for advanced IP and wavelength services, including 10-Gbit/sec services to Ireland.

"Ireland, like other areas of the world, is experiencing a surge in demand for broadband services. Xtera provided a turn-key solution that maximized the use of our existing assets while allowing us to quickly and cost-effectively respond to the demands of the region," said Dan Enright, executive vice president, operations, Global Crossing.

Recent demand for higher bit-rate services and increased capacity drove the demand that lead to the deployment of Xtera's Nu-Wave XLS. Nu-Wave XLS supports up to sixty 10-Gbit/sec channels in a single rack, allowing the upgrade using a minimum of premium collocation space.

Xtera's Nu-Wave XLS is designed to support up to 500 km for new unrepeatered links, enable redeployment of existing submarine fibers and provide significant capacity upgrades for existing unrepeatered links. Supporting up to 600 Gbits/sec in a single bay, the system is well suited for space-constrained applications, the company says.

"Activity in the submarine market is on the rise, especially unrepeatered systems supporting regional networks. Xtera's ability to offer longer distances for new links and significant capacity upgrades for existing links provide operators with new cost-effective options for delivering high-capacity services," said Howard Kidorf, Managing Partner of Pioneer Consulting.
