Vitesse demonstrates 400-mW Gigabit Ethernet PHY
May 1, 2006 Las Vegas, NV -- At the Interop 2006 show, Vitesse Semiconductor announced that it has successfully demonstrated a 400mW integrated Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) PHY that the company says lowers power consumption by up to 50% compared to previous devices. Tested over full 100 m cable lengths with continuous traffic, the company says its prototype "super low power" GbE PHY will become the foundation for future products in its SimpliPHY and SparX families.
"Vitesse's Ethernet products division is focused on accelerating the transition from 10/100 to Gigabit Ethernet while at the same time leveraging our technology expertise to bring strategic advantages to our customers through integration, performance and power," comments Martyn Humphries, vice president and general manager of the Ethernet products division at Vitesse. "By providing a super low power PHY, we are removing the barriers and enabling GbE in a much broader range of applications where power dissipation considerations previously prevented the use of this high-speed connectivity technology."
Along with its 400-mW GbE PHY device, the company also introduced its E-StaX-34 switch-on-a chip (SoC) product, a stackable Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet switch designed to bring affordable GbE connectivity to entry level applications.
