Adtran displays unannounced GPON gear
JUNE 21, 2007 By Stephen Hardy While not making a formal announcement, Adtran Inc. (search for Adtran) took the wraps off its GPON offering here at NXTcomm in Chicago.
The Class B technology will be offered as a feature set of the company's year-old Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform, according to John Bartell, senior product manager, optical access, at Adtran. The OLT unit has been designed with in-house programmable chip technology, according to Bartell. The programmability is necessary to facilitate interoperability with ONTs from multiple vendors, he said. Adtran demonstrated this capability in its booth by having the OLT cards interoperate with an ONT of its own design and one from TXP (search for TXP).
Bartell says Adtran expects to begin trials of the system next quarter, with general availability reached by the end of this year.
