February 19, 2004 Campinas, Brazil and San Jose, CA--FiberWork Optical Communications is releasing the FWL family of optical telephony systems, for high quality voice communication through optical fibers. The equipment permits communication between field technicians and engineers during installation, testing and maintenance of fiber networks, and communication between company offices located up to 180-km apart.

The FWL family is comprised of three product lines, serving different applications. The products offer advanced digital communication techniques and full duplex communication through a single fiber. They can be configured to operate with singlemode (long distance) or multimode (short distance) optical fiber, in any of the 1550, 1310 or 850-nm windows, using high performance lasers or light emitting diodes. All of the products are recommended for applications in hazardous environments, such as areas with high electromagnetic interference or explosion risks.

The FWL210 Optical Talk Set is a compact and robust portable system developed for voice communication between field technicians during installation, testing and maintenance of fiber networks. It offers options of local and remote connection to Public Switched Telephone Network and PABX, allowing advantages such as: conference calls between field operators and company's office, external remote calls, and mobile phone bill reduction. The use of the FWL210 replaces radio communication and walkie-talkies, which are affected by RF interference and low qualify of service.

The FWL220 Optical Telephone is a telephone system for high quality inter-office voice communication through optical fibers focused on customers that own spare dark fibers. It allows integration of widely spread offices, buildings, industrial plants and road emergency points into a single private telephony system. This innovation expands the customer telephony plant without the need of leasing electrical channels from telecom carriers or investment in layers and sub-layers of telecom equipment. The customer can use its own fiber or lease/buy dark fiber, which has become largely available at decreasing costs.

The FWL250 Optical Service Channel was developed to be utilized in optical network's nodes during tests and maintenance of telecom networks. It enables simultaneous communication between all network sites using just an optical fiber. The FWL250 can be set for multiple simultaneous calls or for point to point communication.
