Variable optical attenuators

Variable optical attenuators

These electronically controlled variable optical-fiber attenuators have no moving parts, free-space elements, or fiber-bending mechanisms. Attenuation levels are greater than 70 dB and insertion loss is less than 1 dB. Near-zero backreflection is also obtained without breaking the fiber, according to the manufacturer. The VOA is available in three standard options: miniature devices for use with user-defined electronics, PCB-mounted with integral driver, or stand alone. In addition to the standard range, customer-defined attenuator combinations can be accommodated.
