Telefonica SA (Madrid) awarded a joint $10-million contract to Alcatel (Paris) and Temasa to supply additional high-capacity links between three of the major Canary Islands. Alcatel will supply all the equipment for two new undersea cables linking Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote over a 300-km distance. Both systems will be laid by Temasa using their vessel CS Teneo. The contract also calls for increasing the capacity between Tenerife and Gran Canaria from 565 Mbits/sec to 2.5 Gbits/sec.
