Building Broadband: Brightspeed lights fiber broadband in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Warren, Ohio; Comcast secures $55M agreement to target 10K rural Indiana areas

Nov. 14, 2024
In this latest issue of Building Broadband, we’re tracking new broadband deployments from Archtop Fiber, Brightspeed, Comcast, Metronet and Ritter Communications.

Brightspeed, Comcast, Metronet and Ritter Communications are using various funding sources to extend broadband to more communities.

Archtop Fiber to lead Sullivan County, NY’s broadband expansion
Sullivan County, New York has tapped Archtop Fiber to carry out its broadband expansion effort. The county can expand high-speed broadband Internet service thanks to a nearly $30 million grant. Governor Kathy Hochul and U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced over $140 million in awards from the ConnectALL Municipal Infrastructure Grant Program to expand broadband infrastructure throughout New York State. These public-private partnerships will lead to the construction of more than 1,200 miles of publicly owned fiber infrastructure and wireless hubs, connecting over 60,000 homes and businesses with affordable, symmetric service—offering equal download and upload speeds at a price below the regional average. Sullivan County is receiving $29.9 million through this program.

Brightspeed lights fiber broadband in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Warren, Ohio
Brightspeed, a national leader in ultra-fast fiber broadband, announced today that its new, high-speed fiber internet network is now open for sale in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and the City of Warren and Trumbull County in Ohio. Providing multi-gig internet speeds, Brightspeed’s network now reaches more than 9,000 homes and businesses in Chambersburg and over 23,000 homes and businesses in Warren and Howland Center in Ohio. The provider said that more high-speed fiber broadband access is coming—in the coming weeks, more than 18,000 locations in the Chambersburg, Pennsylvania area and more than 18,000 locations in the Warren, Ohio area will be connected.

Comcast secures $55M to bring broadband to 10K rural Indiana areas
Together with the Indiana Broadband Office (IBO) and the Indiana Office of Community & Rural Affairs (OCRA), Comcast is building high-speed Internet access to unserved and underserved communities in Indiana. The joint $55 million investment will kick off the latest collaborative effort between OCRA, the IBO, and Comcast under Indiana's Next Level Connections broadband grant program.  The joint investment will enable Comcast to build Internet to rural, unserved and underserved portions of Boone, Morgan, Shelby, Miami, Delaware, Fayette and Rush counties, empowering each community to meet the growing connectivity needs of their residents and businesses.

Metronet targets Chaska, Minnesota, as its next fiber expansion community
Metronet’s fiber internet service will soon be coming to Chaska, Minnesota. The service provider has officially begun construction to bring multigigabit internet services directly to homes and businesses throughout the city. As construction progresses, Chaska’s residents will gain access to speeds of up to 5 Gbps and businesses will achieve speeds of up to 10 Gbps. As Metronet’s fiber construction teams move through the community, service will become available neighborhood by neighborhood. The first customer service installations are anticipated early next year.

Ritter Communications secures $590 M to accelerate fiber expansion
Ritter Communications has closed on an upsized $590 million debt refinance. Fifth Third Bank acted as the transaction's lead arranger and administrative agent. Heath Simpson, CEO of Ritter, said that the "investment supports our recently announced expansions into Fort Smith and Texarkana, Arkansas, Texarkana, Texas and Paducah, Kentucky with additional fiber network expansions coming very soon.”
