Greenlight Networks is acquiring Loop Internet, a Scranton, PA-based fiber broadband provider, to expand its reach in the Northeastern Pennsylvania broadband market.

The acquisition of Loop Internet follows Greenlight’s move to expand into Pennsylvania to build fiber internet networks in both the Northeast and South-Central regions of the state.

Greenlight said the Loop Internet deal will significantly expand Greenlight’s presence in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area and accelerate the deployment of its fiber network.

Loop Internet has connected over 10,000 homes and has built out 200 miles of fiber. The service provider offers a range of broadband plans from 350 Mbps to 5 Gbps.

More expansion coming

While Greenlight did not share specific targets, the service provider indicated that further expansion of its fiber network in Pennsylvania is forthcoming.

By buying Loop Internet, Greenlight will not only expand its network reach but also gain new operational efficiencies.

“Loop’s existing network footprint complements our current and planned service areas, and will provide a critical base of operations, in addition to key personnel and resources in the Scranton area,” said Mark Murphy, CEO of Greenlight Networks. “By joining forces, we can move faster into new markets, operate more efficiently, and deliver an exceptional customer experience to even more consumers.”

Outside of Pennsylvania and its home state, New York, Greenlight has been establishing new network footholds in other markets, including Baltimore.

Maintaining local focus

As it has expanded into new markets, Greenlight continues to focus on being a local provider.

Greenlight plans to build on Loop’s strong local expertise and infrastructure with capital investments in the region that are expected to lead to more local hiring initiatives, additional partnerships with local businesses and contractors, and enhanced community engagement efforts.

Like Greenlight, Loop Internet was founded in 2015 by an area resident who was frustrated by the poor internet access within the community.

Over the past decade, the company has expanded to offer fiber internet services in parts of Wilkes-Barre, Mountain Top, Scranton, and Kingston, with several neighboring communities currently under construction and set to come online soon.

Chris Hacken, Founder of Loop Internet, said that becoming part of Greenlight Networks “enables us to accelerate our plans.”

After meeting customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions, Greenlight expects to complete its acquisition of Loop Internet later this year. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
