Indonesia’s Moratelindo taps Ribbon to expand broadband network capacity

Ribbon Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: RBBN) says it has supplied elements from its switching and optical transport portfolios to Moratelindo of Indonesia to expand the service provider’s broadband network capabilities. The new equipment targets Moratelindo’s Sumatra fiber backbone network as well as the Batam undersea link.

Moratelindo will leverage Ribbon’s Apollo line of optical transport systems on the Sumatra backbone to increase its capacity to 3.6 Tbps. Meanwhile, the 280-km Batam subsea route has seen the addition of 2 Tbps of capacity. The capacity expansions are based on 200G wavelength capabilities, which can be increased to 400G, Ribbon says.

PT Mora Telematika Indonesia, aka Moratelndo, is Indonesia’s second largest fixed broadband services provider, according to Ribbon. It operates more than 48,515 km of terrestrial and submarine fiber-optic infrastructure with a total capacity of 18,360 Gbps. “This is a critical project and Ribbon prevailed in a highly competitive process by offering a range of solutions that best meet our needs,” said Michael McPhail. CTO, Moratelindo. “We know from previous experience that Ribbon are able to deliver in these challenging sections of our network and we look forward to our expanded relationship.”

The Sumatra optical backbone features Ribbon’s Apollo 9932 Core OTN Switch while the Batam submarine link benefits from the company’s TM800 programmable transponders. “This is a tremendous win for Ribbon,” said Mickey Wilf, Ribbon’s general manager APAC and MEA, IP Optical. “Moratelindo is an important provider in one of the world’s most populous nations and we’re thrilled to know that they count on us to provide the fast, reliable capacity their business and consumer customers require.”
