Protel selects Marconi DWDM backbone for long distance network in Mexico

Feb. 13, 2002
February 13, 2002--Marconi announced today that it has been selected by Mexican network operator Protel to provide an optical backbone network based on DWDM technology to support its nationwide network.

Marconi announced today that it has been selected by Mexican network operator Protel to provide an optical backbone network based on DWDM technology to support its nationwide network. The contract follows a period of close consultation during which Marconi worked closely with Protel to define its needs and set up the infrastructure components--including power and outside plant equipment-- necessary to deploy the network.

"Marconi took the time to understand the challenges we face and they designed a solution that addresses all of our key concerns," asserts Benigno Perez Lizaur, vice chairman and president of Protel.

In 2001, Protel sent a team of engineers to Genoa, Italy to evaluate and test Marconi's DWDM solution in a lab environment. Marconi's solution was selected by Protel over competing solutions from several other vendors--and will be delivered to Protel through a partnership with VarTec. The network, which includes hardware, software, and support services, will connect Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey-Laredo, Texas.
