RAD adds Whitebox+ option to ETX-2i vCPE product line

RAD has expanded its ETX-2i virtual customer premises equipment (vCPE) product line with a server-based whitebox vCPE it calls Whitebox+. The new addition is license-upgradable for physical network functions such as routing, service demarcation, and performance monitoring.

The Whitebox+ supports wire-speed networking performance and preserves CPU resources for instantiation of additional virtual network functions (VNFs), according to RAD.

"This scalable solution allows operators to spin up a myriad of virtual managed services, from security to routing, SD-WAN to IT services, and much more," according to Ulik Broida, RAD's vice president of marketing and business development. "Better still, using the same installation and management system, as needed, the operator can opt to introduce PNFs such as IP VPN, traffic classification and policing, SLA-based business services, and performance monitoring."

"Our research shows that 85% of operators are now planning to deploy virtualized network functions on a universal CPE or uCPE hardware product, which has a pico-cloud server/storage/switch inside. Operators want options in the way they pursue that model," said Michael Howard, senior research director and advisor, carrier networks, at IHS Markit Technology.

"The RAD approach is innovative in that it offers the options to start with a whitebox uCPE and add modular NID [network interface device], or start with a whitebox NID, then add modular pico-cloud uCPE function," Howard added.
