The S785 laser test source for Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel cables uses an 850-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. The unit tests multimode fiber with the same source as the actual links, enabling more-accurate results than are possible using 850-nm led sources typically used for testing multimode fiber. The device costs $795.
