Zain targets 100G mobile backbone in Kuwait with Huawei

Huawei says it will supply 100-Gbps technology to Zain for the creation of a unified all-IP network in Kuwait for the transport of mobile-generated traffic. The backbone of the network will be the first in the Middle East to leverage 100G IP and Optical Transport Network (OTN) technology end to end, Huawei asserts.

Zain Kuwait deployed 4G LTE technology at the end of last year. With the resulting rapid development of mobile broadband services, Zain decided to deploy a unified all-IP bearer network. Huawei will supply routers and 100-Gbps DWDM platforms for the roll out that will enable both IP and OTN transport; it did not identify the specific platforms in will deliver.

In addition to large capacity, the new network will support advanced network protection, fault location, rapid synergy deployment, and simple operation and maintenance, Huawei says.

"As our LTE subscribers grow in our network and overall data multiplies in demand, we realize the growing pressure this puts on our backhaul. Our radio capabilities need to be able to cater for these growing demands which have been carefully planned, but now it is time to unify our backhaul to be able to provide end to end quality of service and a seamless end user experience,” said Hani El-Kukhun, COO at Zain Kuwait. “Our unified transmission network that we have selected from Huawei gives us the capabilities to cater for today and the future growing demands of data in our backhaul network. The total unified IP end to end network will be one of the most advanced in the region."
