Lightscape Networks demonstrates Gigabit Ethernet networking over its integrated multi-service XDM optical platform at OFC
Lightscape Networks, a member of the ECI Telecom group (ECI Telecom: NASDAQ:ECIL), began successful demonstrations carrying Ethernet traffic over its XDM next-generation multi-service, multi-layer hybrid optical networking solution at the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC 2001) in Anaheim, California.
As an integrated 5-in-1 platform, the XDM supports in a single shelf Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) networking, multi-ring SONET/SDH, a distributed digital cross connect system (DCS), a full suite of DWDM optical networking capabilities and instant end-to-end service provisioning.
Lightscape Networks' demonstration involves carrying live video traffic over Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) and DWDM networking of the XDM. Depending on the type of GigE service, the XDM can switch and groom the GigE traffic and transport it efficiently with carrier class multi-path protection and restoration, over a SONET/SDH infrastructure. Alternatively, the XDM can multiplex multiple GigE channels per wavelength and transport it over a pure optical infrastructure. Carriers can offer pay-by-the-slice services by utilizing the XDM on-demand provisioning of carrier class GigE in increments of 50 Mbits/s.
"Today's transmission demonstrates the XDM's ability to support GigE traffic and combine multiple network elements in one platform," said Emanuel Nachum, acting president of Lightscape Networks North America. "As carriers see its benefits at OFC, they can realize our commitment to significantly reducing their network costs while allowing them to build flexible and scalable next-generation metro and regional networks."
The XDM is a multi-service build-as-you-grow network solution that scales from the metro edge to regional networks within a single platform, minimizing network complexity, cost and provisioning times. The XDM's total integration of DWDM optical networking features include up to 80 wavelengths, multi-channel flexible optical add and drop multiplexers (OADM), amplifiers, boosters, high-resolution transponders and sub-10ms optical protection schemes that allow service providers to build intelligent multiservice optical networks spanning hundreds of miles with in-service upgrades.
Lightscape Networks' products are currently sold globally to major carriers and emerging service providers, including Deutsche Telekom, NTL, D2 Vodaphone, Telemach, Hansol, Banverket, and China Telecom. Lightscape Networks is also undergoing trials in the U.S. and Canada. Sales of Lightscape Networks' complete family of products in 2000 totaled $259.6 million.
