ONI Systems demonstrates transport platform at OFC

March 16, 2001
Mar. 16, 2001--ONI Systems Corp., a provider of optical telecommunications systems for the metropolitan and regional markets, will showcase its ONLINE11000 regional optical transport platform at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2001.

ONI Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:ONIS), a provider of optical telecommunications systems for the metropolitan and regional markets, will showcase its ONLINE11000 regional optical transport platform at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) 2001, Booth No. 2291, March 17-22 in Anaheim. The demonstration will show regional applications leveraging the flexibility of the ONLINE11000 platform. In addition, ONI will also show how carriers can reliably and cost-effectively support wavelength and sub-wavelength services ranging from OC-3 to OC-192 (10 gigabits per second).

The ONLINE11000 transport platform fulfills the carriers' need for longer-reach optical ring products. It is designed for carriers to transmit optical signals of up to 640 kilometers between source and destination without regeneration. The ONLINE11000 provides dynamic optical power management, line-based or path-based optical rerouting of channels, and a universal optical architecture supporting multiple bit rates, protocols and client interfaces, such as OC-12, -48, -192, Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel.

ONI's ONLINE transport platform and its OC-192 capability will allow metro carriers to stay ahead of the continuously growing amount of Internet traffic driven by application service providers, audio/video streaming, storage area networking and more. The OC-192 interface offers carriers the ability to deliver OC-192 service across the entire network and provides a transport interface to the next-generation of high-capacity Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure routers and switches, now beginning to be deployed in the Internet backbone.

ONI's ONWAVE SONET/SDH and ONWAVE Data Multiplexers will also be shown within this demonstration. The multiplexer products enable carriers to pack up to 16 lower-speed channels into a single wavelength, resulting in greater efficiency by eliminating the need for traditional multiplexing equipment in the network. These products can combine various data formats, such as SONET/SDH OC-3, -12, -48, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, to maximize wavelengths.
