Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ:VECO) announced that it has received a multi-unit order for its newly introduced SPECTOR e-beam system from a manufacturer of active optical telecommunications components.

This order was received in the fourth quarter and the systems are scheduled to ship from Veeco's Rochester, NY facility in the first half of 2001. The SPECTOR electron beam systems will be used in the production of high throughput anti-reflective (AR) coatings for DWDM filters and optical isolators. AR coatings are deposited to prevent loss in the transmission of light through a fiber optic communication line.

The SPECTOR e-beam is a fully automated system, with one-touch operation, based on the core technology of Veeco's SPECTOR IBD system. The SPECTOR e-beam features a high energy RF ion source assist to provide dense optical films and control, as well as excellent repeatability and uniformity. It is a versatile evaporation system that is easily configurable to suit a wide range of optical coating processes, including DWDM filters, optical isolators, fiber facets, variable optical amplifiers, optical cross connects, edge filters and coarse WDM filters.
