Nov. 27, 2001--Avaya, Inc. (Basking Ridge, NJ) announced that its SYSTIMX LazrSPEED Solution guarantees Gigabit Ethernet transmission up to 1,000-meter distances. Greater transmission distances, according to Avaya, allow customers to more than triple LAN connectivity distances between campus buildings or high-speed data sharing clusters.

Avaya claims that its LazrSPEED solution, a LAN backbone for private networks, is the only fiber-optic system to guarantee 10-Gbits/sec serial transmission over 300-meter distances (using 850-nanometer multimode fiber with associated apparatus).

The solution uses a short-wavelength multimode fiber to transmit data at rates up to 10 Gbits/sec, and includes building cable with maximum 72 fiber count; new indoor/outdoor cables in 12, 24, or 36 fiber count; dielectric campus cables (non-metallic outside plant cable suitable for direct burial, aerial or use in conduit) with maximum 96 fiber count; and a complete line of apparatus including configurable jumpers. It can also accommodate shorter distance network requirements by including cables that support 150-meter distances at 10-Gbits/sec rates with a retroactive transmission distance guarantee.
