LayerOne, Inc., a provider of optical transport exchange, announced Sphera Optical Networks, Inc. will be among the first network service providers to participate in trials of LayerOne's new optical interconnection platform. LayerOne is deploying intelligent optical switches in its NEXUS Optical Distribution Exchanges to aggregate optical networks and actively groom circuits from OC-192 down to STS1 SONET or from 10 Gbps down to 10 Mbps Ethernet. Sphera's connection of its metro network with LayerOne's next-generation optical interconnection solution is expected to dramatically reduce provisioning intervals between multiple network providers by creating high-density, optical network interconnection hubs in major metropolitan markets.
LayerOne Exchanges are designed for service providers looking for smarter, more capital efficient ways to bridge the gap between metro and long haul networks. Currently, Exchanges are interconnecting networks physically. Upon successful completion of the trial of its new optical interconnection platform, LayerOne will also be able to provide logical cross connects.
