JANUARY 26, 2011 -- Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Hong Kong Broadband Network Ltd. (HKBN), a wholly owned subsidiary of City Telecom (HK) Ltd. (HKEX: 1137, NASDAQ: CTEL), have jointly announced that HKBN will deploy the Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System to support expansion of its IP network.
HKBN's goal in upgrading its network with the Cisco CRS-3 is to maintain the “Speed Guarantee” of 80 percent steady speed for its 100-Mbps services despite the escalating Internet demands of businesses and consumers. HKBN will consolidate its existing network infrastructure, reducing the number of core routers and simplifying network management. The network simplification is expected to reduce the lead time for adding new networking devices from weeks to days.
The deployment of Cisco CRS-3 also will support the delivery of value-added and auxiliary services of HKBN, such as high-quality picture and smooth streaming of its IPTV service “bbTV.”
Systems integration work will be conducted by Macroview Telecom, a Cisco Gold Certified Partner, and the deployment is planned to commence in March this year.
According to Leo Fung, network manager, technical development, HKBN, “It is one of HKBN’s missions to experience the joy of advancing and applying telecom technology for the benefit of the public. We launched our 100-Mbps service in 2004, and our 1-Gbps service in 2005. Throughout the years, high speed broadband has become the norm in Hong Kong. With our rapidly growing subscription base and extended network coverage, we need a powerful, future-proof core router to cater for the surging demand of bandwidth and stability. Cisco has been our long-term partner, and we are glad to have its support for the deployment of this powerful CRS-3 router.”
