Pakistani private submarine fiber optic cable operator Transworld Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity, say they will upgrade the TW1 undersea cable system that connects Pakistan, the UAE, and Oman. The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

The TW1 system spans more than 1,200 km and comprises a two-fiber pair link with an ultimate design capacity of 1.28 Tbps. The upgrade will provide the option of adding six additional wavelengths, using plug and play technology.

“This upgrade will enable Transworld to maintain its extreme importance for development of reliable broadband services in Pakistan as well as in Middle East,” said Kamran Malik, president Transworld. “We are very happy to rely on SubCom’s accumulated experience and expertise of innovative state of the art technologies for submarine cable systems upgrade. This upgrade is indeed a significant step for Transworld, as we are demonstrating again our capabilities to meet expectations for high-quality international connectivity services for our ever demanding Pakistani and Middle Eastern customers.”

Transworld is a joint venture of Orascom Telecom, Orastar Ltd., and Omzest Group. It was created in the wake of the deregulation of the Pakistani Telecom sector with a mandate to operate the first privately owned submarine fiber-optic cable system between Karachi, Pakistan; Muscat, Oman; and Fujairah, UAE.
