RASCOM has decided to extend its fiber-optic network to connect Russia to Germany through the Nordic countries via a 40-Gbps link. The Russian carrier will use coherent technology from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) for the job, the systems house has announced.

RASCOM’s fiber-optic backbone network transports approximately 50 percent of Russia’s cross-border Internet traffic via Ciena’s (formerly Nortel’s) coherent 40-Gbps technology already, Ciena asserts. The existing network links Moscow to Stockholm through sites in St. Petersburg and Helsinki.

The new route will extends RASCOM’s network to Frankfurt through Copenhagen. Ciena says that RASCOM will deploy the ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical Platform on this route to support an initial six 40-Gbps wavelengths. The platform offers a migration path to 100 Gbps, Ciena points out.

“There is growing demand amongst Russian service providers for a high-speed network link to Frankfurt – an imperative route for business. With Ciena’s coherent solution, RASCOM can meet the growing bandwidth demands of our customers and easily scale as capacity requirements alter. Ciena offers unbeatable flexibility in network planning as well as simple commissioning and operation processes, enabling us to respond to changing customer needs in a timely manner,” said V. I. Kireev, general director of the closed joint-stock company RASCOM.
