Undersea communications equipment supplier TE SubCom (SubCom) says it has successfully completed testing of a new four-port branching unit, the first such device on the market for multilayered undersea telecommunication networks.
Unlike the standard three-port branching unit (BU), the four-port BU is designed to accommodate three separate power paths and enable alternative powering configurations.
In testing, SubCom says it integrated two four-port BUs with a variety of armored and unarmored cables as part of separate systems. The company completed two comprehensive sea trials in shallow water and deep water and confirmed the successful deployment, sea-bed placement, and recovery of the four-port BUs using standard shipboard equipment.
“Our four-port BU utilizes the same SubCom branching unit body and branch coupling assembly as the three-port BU, meaning this new technology offers the same high performance and reliability our customers have come to expect,” said Maurice Kordahi, managing director wet plant development at SubCom.
